Not as good as I expected based on the reviewsSeptember 6, 2010 G. Smith(Lawrenceville, GA) I bought this based on the reviews on Amazon and found it underwhelming. First, the cheese flies everywhere - it does not stay contained within the grater. It is big and somewhat clunky and not that easy to use. After spending twice what I saw other graters for this thing basically sits in our cabinet not being used.
Durable & StrongAugust 13, 2010 Marie Banks(Petersburg,VA USA 23803-8834) I love this grater. It only has one of the slit graters on the side. The graters themselves are very sharp. I worry about the handle because it turns. This does come with the measuring cup which is 2 cups. The lid IS NOT at all secure over the measuring cup. Everything with this grater is fine. I just didn't like the fact that the lid was a loosey goosey.
Very nice grater - a few tipsJuly 13, 2010 JEG(Atlanta GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really like mine. I bought it after I heard the reviews so I'll comment on my experiences and the concerns on the reviews.
The unit works great. I had a little cheapy grater that broke. The area for grating it's pretty big and makes the job faster. It has pretty much all thickness settings you'll ever need (fine, coarse, more coarsed, and slicer). It is beautiful to look at and the container it's great when you make a dish that requires a lot of cheese or if you want to have some for letfovers and avoid having to unwrap/wrap stored cheese.
I tested with parmiggiano regiano and pepper jack which are very different in texture and it did a great job on both.
Here is how I'd address the concerns some uses have posted
1 - Water trapped in the handle. I can see how this can be a problem however I've never washed my graters in the dish washer. I recommend you do the same to avoid this problem. I simply give it a quick water rinse. If I'm grating a soft cheese then I may use a sponge to wipe it for about 20 seconds and let it air dry. I don't like the heat of the electronic dish washer on my appliances that have rubber/plastic components like this grater. If you want to use it in the dish washer then drill a couple of little holes on the sides of the handle and should take care of the problem (as recommended by another user)
2 - Cheese falling on the surface when using the container - This is inevitable and is going to happen with any grater that is vertically oriented. My previous unit was horizontal and some cheese would also fall out of the container. .Most of the cheese will fall just fine into the container for proper storage. The remaining bits I'll throw them into the container or discard them when I clean my cutting board
3 - Stability - I found the unit to be very stable when using on a cutting board. If using with the container at the bottom make sure you don't press too hard on the handle or the container could come loose or brake around the edges. You really don't need a lot of force to make this greater work. You can also grab it gently by the sides at the top below the handle. Just be careful because if your hand slips you may cut yourself.
4 - Slicing angle on cheese - The metal sides where the blades are curved so if you are grating a block of cheese in a large section your remaining block of cheese may not be completely square. To me this isn't a big deal because I will grate some more later and it won't make a difference however if later I need to slice the remaining cheese by hand with a knife I may have to trim it a bit in order to get perfect cuber or slices.
Overall I'm happy with the unit...another great KA product.
Great graterJune 27, 2010 MedStudent 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
All I needed was a simple grater for shredding chesse for pizza, and slicing veggies for sandwiches. This works great. Price is great for the item, and cleanup is a breeze. The only thing I don't like is the rubber rim along the bottom, as food can get stuck inside it, but it is very easy to remove and clean. I keep it off, but you could leave it on and clean it.
Nice size and quality for the priceMay 4, 2010 Shala Kerrigan(Anchorage) I needed a new box grater and after looking at several, this was the one I picked up.
It's very solidly built, I'm usually a little suspicious of plastic but this seems like it will last well. The problems some people have had with the handle aren't an issue for me because I handwash all my dishes.
I love the size of this grater, and since I hand wash anyway pulling the rubber off the bottom to clean isn't a problem. The size of the holes and the way they are distributed with the micro holes and the slicer on the narrower sides, and the medium sized and large holes on the bigger sides is very sensible.
